Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy

Has its roots in Osteopathy. William Garner Sutherland was an elder in the Osteopathic field. Through his experience he became aware of the many levels of primary patterns that flow through our bodies, he also began to see how our bodies can also be reshaped by outer forces and pressures. William moved from a mechanical approach to supporting the body to resume its natural patterning to a very subtle and gentle approach. Today the legacy of William Sutherland’s knowings are embraced in the practice of Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy.

Biodynamic craniosacral therapy is a gentle, non-invasive and powerful ‘light touch’ therapy that assists the body to heal itself. During a session a practitioner makes a series of light hand contacts or ‘holds’. Common areas of the body that are contacted are the feet, sacrum and head.

The client lies fully-clothed on a massage table while the practitioner uses touch to ‘listen’ to the clients system, identifying areas of health and vitality, and areas of restriction or holding. Biodynamic craniosacral therapy involves no adjustments or manipulations. The practitioner’s act of quiet listening while maintaining a peaceful settled space is enough to set healing processes in motion. As the client’s body responds to this neutral observation, the client may experience small movements or other sensations in areas of the body, or simply a deep state of relaxation.

Within a session, clients may experience an easing of symptoms or the resolution of long-standing conditions, along with general improvements in wellbeing such as better sleep, energy levels and an increased ability to cope with stress. Biodynamic craniosacral therapy treats the whole body, with its myriad physiological and psychological influences. It creates an environment in which the body can access its own inherent healing potential and natural wisdom.

“Just think about it, each one of us grew ourselves in our mothers womb. Our bodies grew themselves from the intelligence that is coded in our DNA, much the same as that of nature. This intelligence, this knowledge is ancient and ever present. While we grew our own bodies, we were held in our placenta within the womb, surrounded by fluid motion. It was this relational holding space that allowed us to form our bodies fully. It is this relationship that nurtures and ignites health and the possibility of regeneration. As practitioners of BCST we hold a space that kind of mimics that of the womb, it is a very still space where your body can be gently held and in turn settle into it’s own stillness and be enabled to access its deeper resources, access its Knowing In Nature” – Rachel Shields
